Windows Media Player Codec Installation Package 9

Microsoft offer the following summary of codecs:

‘Codecs determine the size of a file, the bit rate of a stream, and the way encoded video and audio content looks and sounds. The codecs do this by compressing an audio or video source during encoding and then decompressing the audio or video during playback.’

In other words, there are many ways you can make a video file smaller, but each technique requires the end user (that is, your PC) to have the right files installed (codecs) on the system in order to view the compressed video. If you have ever downloaded a file and found the frustration of Media Player wanting or refusing to download more codecs, then this pack should help.

Back to Microsoft:

'This package delivers support for the latest Windows Media Audio and Video codecs for computers running Windows Media Player 7.1, Windows Media Player for Windows XP, Windows Media Player 9 Series, and Windows Media Player 10'.

Keep in mind that it is only the Microsoft codec pack and does not cover other video file types such as DivX or Xvid (which are confusingly called AVI files too).
