The Brother MFC-7840W uses a more complicated process to print compared to inkjet printers. An electrically charged rotating drum receives an image of the page to be printed through a laser beam. Through photoconductivity, the charge on areas exposed to light is removed and the remaining charged areas take up the dry ink or toner. Through direct contact and heat, the drum then prints the image onto the paper. Because of this process, the overall cost of using a laser printer also varies, with the price of paper, toner, and the frequency of drum replacement being the major contributing factors.
