Azurewave?s BT-183 comes preconfigured and ready in certain laptop devices, such as the ASUS ultra-portable notebook UL30 and its variants. The BT-183 is an internal Bluetooth adapter and thus precludes the need for a unwieldy USB dongle for Bluetooth connections. It is fully USB 2.0 and EDR compliant, and operates on the Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity (2.1 Mbps), but is also backwards compatible with Bluetooth 1.1x connections, with speeds of up to 723 Kbps. Like most Bluetooth adapters, it has an effective range of 10 to 20 meters and uses the FHSS (frequency hopping spread spectrum) modulation.
Internal Bluetooth adapters are now commonplace in laptops and netbooks, unlike those in the first half of the last decade where external Bluetooth adapters, known as dongles, took center stage since not all devices are Bluetooth ready. In a Bluetooth connection, devices engage in a communication type called pairing, where a device can ?talk? to only another Bluetooth-ready device (some Bluetooth devices can communicate with multiple systems, however). This ad hoc connection is more secure than other wireless technologies and is primarily used for wireless connections between devices.AUTHOR
