The first known commercially available webcam, then called the QuickCam, first entered the market in 1994 and was created by a U.S. computer hardware and software company named Connectix. This company later sold its entire product line to another U.S. company, Logitech, in 1998. QuickCam was originally designed by Jon Garber, who at first wanted to call it the 'Mac-camera', but was disallowed by Connectix's marketing department, which saw the opportunity of the webcam to someday becoming a cross-platform product.
