The Nvidia nForce Serial ATA Controller was designed for several Windows operating systems, including Windows 2003, Windows 2000, Windows NT, and Windows XP. As with most ATA controllers, it is permissible to have more than one of these to handle your hard drives, and most people really do use one controller per hard drive on their rigs. There was originally quite a bit of confusion with this controller regarding a bug that the updates to the controller brought to users of Windows Vista who were running Quicktime applications, but rolling back the settings for the controllers eventually took care of the issue. Apparently, there were issues with some of the nForce updates' compatibility with Quicktime functions, and these were revealed to be a problem with Vista computers.

Between 1980 and 1990, the term chipset was often used to refer to graphics and custom audio chips. They are often classified as North Bridge and South Bridge chipsets. The north bridge's role is to link your CPU to the devices requiring very high speed in order to operate; on the other hand, the south bridge connects your CPU to lower speed peripherals and gadgets. In the same year Chips and Technologies started the manufacturing of chipsets for personal computers.
