The PowerShot G2 from Canon is a compact camera meant for both professional photographers and general consumers, much like its predecessor, the G1. It sports a higher maximum resolution of 2272 x 1704, however, it can also take photos at lower resolutions, such as 1600 x 1200, 1024 x 768 or 640 x 480. Images can be saved in RAW or JPEG formats with three quality levels ? super fine, fine, and normal, however, it does not have an image stabilization feature. There are six white balance presets built-in; the user can also set the white balance himself for greater color accuracy. While it can record video at 15 fps, the camera does not have a microphone for recording audio.

The camera supports three main types of metering, namely, center-weighted, evaluative zone (matrix), and spot metering. The matrix or evaluative metering feature uses multi-zone light assessment technology, which requires the camera to measure the intensity of light in several points of the scene it is being focused on. The results obtained at each of these points are then combined to configure the best exposure settings. Some of the factors considered are autofocus point (areas in or out of the camera focus), shades of color present in the scene, backlighting, and distance from the subject. On the other hand, with spot metering the device meters only from a rectangular area in the middle of the frame.
