The ATI Radeon X1950 Pro features low noise operation, a Native PCI Express x16 bus interface, eight vertex shader processors, 384 million transistors on 90 nm fabrication process, and up to 256-bit eight-channel GDDR4 memory interface. This graphics card from ATI also possesses advanced image quality features that include 2x/4x/6x anti-aliasing modes, high resolution texture support of up to 4k x 4k, 64-bit floating point HDR, and 32-bit integer HDR. The ATI Radeon X1950 Pro also features an ultra threaded shader engine, Avivo video and display platform, and CrossFire multi GPU technology.

Since 1995 graphics processing units or GPUs produced have supported hardware overlays and YUV color spaces. These two are found to be essential for digital video playback. From 2000 up to present many of the GPUs produced have supported MPEG primitives. Recently, graphics cards have been given the ability to decode high definition videos. Video decoding processes that may now be accelerated by modern GPUs include inverse quantization, motion compensation, intraframe prediction, bit stream processing, variable length decoding, in-loop deblocking filter, inverse discrete cosine transform, and more.
