For a computer to be able to work with external memory storage devices such as SD memory cards, SDIO, and MMC or MultiMedia Card, which is a flash memory card, it needs a host controller such as the Ricoh R5C807. This allows the host CPU of the system to connect to the socket where the SD card is. SD, or Secure Digital memory cards and SDIO are inexpensive and fast removable mass storage devices that are already used by most computer users.

As the name suggests, a card reader is a digital information input device that is designed to read data from a storage unit shaped like a card. Typically, computer users store and transport data in these card shaped media because they are small enough to be taken anywhere in a pocket and can be accessed almost through any reader. Aside from memory cards and smart cards, there are also what are called access control cards that allow users to gain access or control over specific requirements. These include biometric, barcode, magnetic stripe, and proximity cards.
