The RME Fireface 400 is a FireWire based audio interface. Some of its main features are active jitter suppression, controllability from the front panel of the device, a flexible I/O system and a matrix router with 648 channels that supports sample rates of up to 192 kHz. The device has two balanced inputs for instrumental and line signals. The front panel display and rotary encoder help in simple standalone operations. The internal memory of the device backs up all settings when the device is powered down and restores them at the time of booting. The device can be powered both externally, or operate on phantom power through its FireWire connector. The device features SteadyClock, RME’s proprietary clock technology.

The SteadyClock technology incorporated into the product allows a single device to be the sync reference for all the other instruments in a recording studio. It helps in removing jitter, refreshing clock signals, and ensuring high quality analog to digital and digital to analog (AD/DA) conversion, all of which results in enhanced audio output quality. The technology uses only one quartz oscillator as opposed to the multiple quartz oscillators used in general clock sections. Thus the frequency used by SteadyClock is not the same as digital audio frequency and this factor helps in perfecting disturbance reduction. It's also faster than other, similar technologies and sports efficient analog filtering as well.
