The device is equipped with a see-through sensor, in order to ensure that it does not accidentally try to print on labels with the thermal layer peeled off. Attempting to print on such paper can disrupt the printing process, and may also cause permanent damage to the print head, which is designed to interact with the smooth thermal layer only. The sensor is attached on a glass cover, under which the paper passes during printing. The sensor continuously detects the structural integrity of the thermal layer, and stops the printing process immediately, if it detects that a particular label does not have the coating.
