The PC2001 is a standard developed jointly by Microsoft and Intel in 2001 and succeeds the PC99 standard. It aims to provide manufacturers with guidelines when designing hardware to be used with Microsoft Windows Operating Systems. As the last standard in the series, the PC2001 builds on PC99, whilst eliminating some of the requirements in earlier versions which were no longer deemed important or relevant. Perhaps one of the most visible results of the earlier PC99 standard is the connector colours, most of which are still in use today.
