Terratec Phase 26 is an external studio interface, which can churn out audio files encoded at bitrates up to 24-bit at audio frequencies as high as 96 kHz. The device can be operated in four different modes as per the user’s requirement, and these modes are easy to select via a series of buttons with accompanying LEDs provided on the front panel. The product is equipped with a variety of input ports, including a line-in at the front and S/PDIF socket at the rear. However, it is capable of utilizing only one input source at a time, and can only record in stereo mode as a result.

The device utilizes ASIO (Audio Stream Input/ Output) technology, which is a protocol for sound cards capable of handling digital audio. Typically, the technology creates an interface with high fidelity and low latency between the sound card and a software application. This allows sound engineers and musicians to make use of any external audio hardware directly, without requiring an intermediary medium. This is where the technology differs from DirectSound developed by Microsoft, which does act as an intermediary signal path between sound hardware and software programs, but does not allow the user to access the card directly, in order to fine tune the way this works.
