eMPIA EM2870 USB Video Capture Device is a chipset designed according to the VLSI (Very-Large-Scale-Integration) architecture. It features a 2-wire serial interface, which manufacturers can use to include support for legacy video capture devices in their products. The chipset does not require any external memory to function, and thus can be used in devices with little onboard memory, like cameras and video cards. It supports HFCR (High Fidelity Color Reproduction), which ensures that videos and still photos captured by devices having the chipset will show the actual colors of the photographed objects with high degree of accuracy. Finally, seamless support for USB 1.1 and 2.0 connectivity technologies ensures that the chipset can be used in PnP (Plug and Play) devices.

The design of the chipset is based on VLSI (Very-Large-Scale-Integration) architecture, which uses highly condensed fabrication techniques to embed thousands of transistors in a chip. The structure consists of a few hundred macro blocks interconnected through wiring. Each macro block is capable of handling a few functions. Also, the structure allows a single chipset to support at least a thousand (if not more) logic gates. This is a major benefit for manufacturers of multi-function devices, since they can use a single chip to run all the different processes that a particular device is supposed to carry out, instead of having to employ multiple chips, each capable of handling only a few specific functionalities.
