LCD is short for Liquid Crystal Display. This technology uses light modulation from liquid crystals to display images. It was Friedrich Reinitzer who discovered the use of liquid crystalline in 1888 and Vsevolod Frederiks who devised LCD technology in 1927. In 1960, pioneering work on liquid crystals was undertaken and in 1970 use of LCs was filed for patent. In 2007, LCD televisions surpassed CRT units in worldwide sales and last October 2011 the technology was adapted for use in Toshiba tablet PCs.
