Keeping track of the all the drivers on your computer can be a frustrating and lengthy task. Windows update will include some drivers but it has always remained a mystery why full driver update service was never included as feature of Windows. To update drivers on your PC, you normally need to run around to each manufacturer’s or developer’s site and check for a random-released update. There are no patterns or schedules here – driver updates are realised at the whim of the developers or manufacturers. Some hardware includes automatic driver update software that loads when you start Windows. The problem is that your computer can be bogged down by these programs loading to check for updates, plus they can cause you to randomly restart your computer when you are in the middle of something important (like hanging on Facebook, or playing Scrabble). Updating your drivers is important to both system stability and security, so that’s why driver update software is important – and even better if it is freeware.

DeviceDoctor is a addresses many of these problems. Apart from scanning your system for outdated drivers, it downloads the latest driver updates and installs them automatically. You can also chose for the software to simply scan your system and allow manual download of the latest files. In testing, we found the program updated many drivers not included in Windows update and only missed one driver on our test system. Considering that it would have required a visit to 15 different sites to download these driver updates individually, this is an excellent timesaver. For a freeware program, few programs come even close to providing a simple solution to driver updates.
